Hi, I’m Elise
My art practice is all about love and is for those who believe we need more of that in the world. By embodying care and nurture of self, others, and our environment I know we can bring more beauty into the world. For me, weaving is an expression of inner peace, loving-kindness, and a flow state that centers me. My textile artworks are a tangible echo of this state that inspires you to slow down, to connect, and to reflect.
I weave post-minimalist textile artworks, including commissioned pieces, using ethically sourced natural fibers and materials. Textile art is unique in its ability to represent natural environments without the contradiction of inflicting harm in the making of the work i.e. without extractive mining processes, plastics entering waterways, or VOCs. I embrace this ethical imperative and select materials with holistic wellbeing in mind, meeting the highest standards for human-ecological health. These artworks are heirloom pieces, made to last and to enrich your inner and outer worlds.
The post-minimalist aesthetic also reflects my belief that, much like Rita Dove’s definition of poetry, art “distilled” is at its most powerful. My art speaks to the challenges and opportunities of our time; our consumption patterns, creativity, mindfulness, regeneration, and justice. I have a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts, specialising in the transformative potential of the arts - for both makers and audiences. As Brene Brown says, “Art has the power to render sorrow beautiful, make loneliness a shared experience, and transform despair into hope . . . the transformative power of art is in this sharing . . . it is the sharing of art that whispered, ‘You are not alone’” (2017, p.42).
